Pickling of stainless steel

Pickling is a chemical process used to remove surface contaminants such as oxides, slag, dirt, and rust from the surface. The purpose of pickling is to improve the appearance and corrosion resistance of the surface. Pickling is carried out using specialized pickling agents for stainless steel. It can be done using brushes, spraying, or immersing the steel components in the pickling solution. After pickling, the steel must be thoroughly rinsed and cleaned to remove any remaining pickling agents before the passivation process begins.

Pickling is done to restore the protective chromium oxide layer on the surface of stainless steel. Stainless steel contains a small amount of chromium, which reacts with oxygen in the air to form an invisible oxide layer that protects the steel from corrosion.
